Cambodia Launches Online Filing for Patents, Utility Models, and Industrial Designs

Cambodia has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its intellectual property system with the launch of online filing for patents, utility models, and industrial designs. This new capability streamlines the application process, allowing applicants to file their applications digitally. It is also a key component of Cambodia’s broader e-government campaign, which aims to transition numerous public services online to enhance accessibility and convenience for citizens and businesses alike.

MISTI Launches Online Filing Service

The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) has officially launched a new online filing service for patents, utility models, and industrial designs. This marks a significant milestone in modernizing Cambodia’s intellectual property (IP) system. The announcement was made during a launch event on January 14, 2024, presided over by Minister Hem Vanndy and attended by representatives from government ministries, private sector organizations, and international bodies, including the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Japan Patent Office (JPO).

“The launch of the online filing service for patents, utility models, and industrial designs is another step forward in enhancing public service delivery, ensuring greater convenience for businesses and the public. Applicants can now submit their applications anytime, anywhere, reducing logistical burdens for businesses,” said Minister Hem Vanndy.

Key Features of the Online Filing Service

The new system streamlines the process of registering patents, utility models, and industrial designs, making it more accessible and efficient. Applicants can now submit their applications anytime, anywhere, reducing the need for in-person visits and lowering logistical burdens for businesses. However, certain documents may still need to be filed in person. This development aligns Cambodia’s IP framework with international standards, ensuring robust protection for innovations in global markets.

Online Payment of Application Fees

An important addition to the system is the introduction of online payment options for application fees. This feature offers applicants a convenient, secure, and efficient method to fulfill financial requirements, significantly improving the overall application experience.

Notification of Office Actions Through the Online Portal

To further enhance the applicant experience, notifications of office actions will now be delivered through the online portal. This ensures timely and reliable access to essential updates, helping applicants stay informed and respond promptly to official requirements.

Patent and Industrial Design Databases

MISTI launched a patent and industrial design database on the Department of Industrial Property’s website in April 2024. This resource provides public access to essential IP information, supporting transparency and accessibility for both Cambodian and ASEAN users. The database can be accessed at this link. However, it is still undergoing updates to include all necessary documents to make it fully current.

Applicants are encouraged to take full advantage of these features to streamline the process of securing intellectual property rights. Stay tuned for further updates as the patent application process continues to evolve.
