New procedures for international trademark registration deadline extensions will come into effect in Cambodia on March 17, 2025.
According to an announcement of the Department of Intellectual Property Rights on March 4, 2025, all applications for extension of time will automatically be granted an extension of 60 days from the date of submission of the request or electronic submission (IPAS reception date).
Under current practice, following an extension request, the DIP issues a notification of extension granting 60 days from the date of the notification. As issuing the notification often took several months, in effect the applicant could benefit from quite long extension periods. This current practice remains in effect for direct trademark applications, as the change only pertains to international registrations under the Madrid System.
With the change, the DIP will no longer issue a notification, and the applicant (or agent) will need to determine and track the extended deadline on their own, as no extension notification will be issued. The change of practice should reduce the workload of the Registrar, as they will not need to process extension requests any longer.
